Your mother's bracelet bears the first names of her three grandchildren. A few months after receiving it, she welcomes a fourth. The piece of jewelry, however, will always carry three: a first name cannot be added to an already manufactured piece.
This situation is prepared for at the time of ordering. Three decisions matter: how to account for a growing family, what length to choose without being able to measure the wrist, and in what order to write the first names.
Grandmother's Day is celebrated in France on the first Sunday of March. Each piece of jewelry is custom-made: 48 hours for engraving, shipping within 3 days, then about a week for transport: allow 10 to 15 days in total. Order at least three weeks in advance. Standard delivery is free outside of French overseas departments and territories, and a tracking number will be sent to you upon shipment.
Three or four slots, 15 characters per first name
The number of slots depends on the model. The chain bracelet with engraving for up to 3 first names ($39.90) gives each first name its own plate, engraved in relief, and the plates follow each other along the chain. For four, two pieces exist. The personalized bracelet for up to 4 first names ($44.90) aligns the first names on the chain, separated by a link. The infinity bracelet for up to 4 first names ($39.90) repeats the infinity symbol along the bracelet; each first name is inscribed in a loop. No bracelet designed for full first names offers a fifth slot.
On these three models, each first name has a maximum of 15 characters. Compound first names, accents, and apostrophes are accepted. A compound first name fits into a single field, but it reads as two first names. Jean-Baptiste is 13 characters with the hyphen and fits; Marie-Clémentine is 16 and does not fit. The link between the number of first names and readability is discussed in our article on necklaces with children's first names.
When a grandchild arrives after the order
Personalization is final: 24 hours after validation, the list goes into production as is; before that, you can correct or cancel it free of charge.
So ask yourself calmly: is another birth possible? If so, today's complete list will be incomplete tomorrow. Two choices are possible: accept a snapshot, with the grandchildren present on the day of the gift, or choose from the outset a formula that does not become outdated.
More than four grandchildren, or more to come
Beyond four, or when the family is still growing, a decision must be made.
Engrave everything on a bangle
The customizable engraved bracelet ($34.90) is not sold as a first name bracelet, but it can carry more: this thin bangle, closed on a flat plate, accepts a free text of up to 36 characters, engraved in relief. Six short first names can fit. "Camille Hugo Léna Arthur Jade Louis" is 35 characters with spaces. Add commas, and you're at 40, and the text no longer fits.
The limit is readability. The text is engraved on a 2 mm wide plate: the letters are necessarily small. The product page displays a preview of the rendering before purchase: please check it.
One initial per grandchild
If the first names are long, or if there are five, the customizable initial bracelet (starting from $39.90) carries one to five initials, one per link, in the order indicated. Each grandchild keeps their place. Beyond five, it no longer works.
Two grandchildren who share an initial become indistinguishable: Camille and Clara are two C's. A sequence of initials only speaks to those who know the family.
One bracelet per first name
Each grandchild has their own piece of jewelry, and a future birth is handled by adding another bracelet. The drawback is quantifiable: the personalized first name bracelet is $34.90 each. Six grandchildren mean six bracelets, and six bracelets on the same wrist is a lot.
Give up the list
Engrave a word or date on the engraved bangle, or choose the initial of the last name on the personalized bangle with initial engraving ($34.90), where the letter is selected from A to Z without any input. This option instantly solves the problem for large families and upcoming births. Its limitation: the jewelry no longer designates anyone in particular.
As a last resort, beyond bracelets: some necklaces in the store offer more space, up to eight first names on the puzzle pendant necklace and nine on the family tree necklace, limited to 10 characters per first name.
Choosing the size without measuring the wrist
Measuring a grandmother's wrist means announcing the gift to her. Depending on the model, the question may or may not arise.
No length to choose: the engraved bangle, which is one-size-fits-all and can be tightened or loosened by hand, and the 3-first-name chain bracelet, adjustable from 17 to 22 cm. The initial bangle is also one-size-fits-all: an open bangle with a 62 mm diameter, it adjusts with slight pressure.
With a choice, but an adjustment margin: the 4-first-name bracelet is available in 18 or 20 cm, with a 5 cm extender in both cases, and its product page recommends 18 cm if you are unsure. The infinity bracelet requires choosing a range from three options: 11 to 16 cm (child's wrist), 17 to 22 cm (common adult range), 21 to 26 cm (large wrist or intentionally worn loose); its product page specifies that these ranges avoid the need for precise measurement.
With a fixed length, no adjustment mentioned on the product page: the personalized first name bracelet is available in 11, 17 or 18 cm, and its product page recommends 18 cm for adults if in doubt. The customizable initial bracelet is only available in 17 cm: nothing to choose, but no alternative if the piece doesn't fit.
When you need to choose a length, measure a bracelet she already wears and that fits her, rather than her wrist. A size error does not entitle you to a return or exchange on a personalized item. This is why it's better to choose a bangle or a model with an adjustment margin over a fixed length when you have no reference points. For a ring, the same principle applies: measuring a ring size from a ring already worn.
In what order to write the first names
On the 4-first-name bracelet as on the initial bracelet, the order is as you enter it. For the 3-first-name chain bracelet and the infinity bracelet, enter the first names in the desired order, from the First Name 1 field to the last. In a family, this order benefits from being decided rather than imposed.
- By age : from oldest to youngest. The order is justified without discussion, and each future birth would naturally follow.
- By family : the children of each son or daughter grouped together. Each household can find their own at a glance.
For spelling, the product pages specify that the input is reproduced identically, including accents and capital letters. Our guide to checking an engraving is dedicated to this. Re-read your input before validating, then check the order summary.
In summary
- Three or four first names depending on the model, maximum 15 characters each, including compound first names.
- Personalization is final: consider any future births.
- For a large or growing family: free text on the engraved bangle, up to five initials, one bracelet per first name, or a word, a date, a family initial.
- Without measuring the wrist, prefer a bangle, engraved or with an initial, which adjusts by hand, or a model with an adjustment margin: a size error does not entitle you to a return.
- Decide the order of the first names, then re-read accents, hyphens, and capital letters before validating.
- Grandmothers' Day (first Sunday of March): order at least three weeks in advance.
The list is decided when choosing the model, not in the input field.
